Research activities in English language teaching (ELT) in Malaysia have been dynamic over the years, as reflected in the number of conferences and research presentations. This study analyses the types and topics of research presented at the MELTA conferences from 2005 to 2009 in order to identify trends and changes in the perception and reception of English language teaching in Malaysia. Abstracts from the conferences were used as data and analysed through content analysis to determine the general distribution of common topics. The findings show that themes related to approach and methodology were the most frequently presented, followed by reading, writing and Internet/new technology, while areas such as listening, speaking, grammar, motivation and communication received less attention. The study discusses how past research trends can inform future research and contribute to improving English language teaching and learning in Malaysia.
